What will happen?
On your first visit to one of our colon hydrotherapists they will expect you to be nervous, but will put you at ease! The first appointment includes taking a full case history, explaining the procedure and the treatment itself. The colonic treatment involves introducing a speculum 1.5inches (4cm) to open the sphincter. An inlet and outlet tube is attached to the outside of the speculum so that the system is open, with water going in and water and waste out. Approximately 60 litres of filtered water are used in one treatment but with only small amounts allowed to enter the bowel at any one time. This acts to dilate the bowel and stimulate it to empty. In all, about 15 litres enters the bowel during treatment with the vast majority coming out again. The water pressure is carefully controlled and is in fact lower than is normally generated during a bowel movement. To begin with water is put into the lower bowel whilst on your left side and then after about 10 minutes your colon hydrotherapist will ask you to turn onto your back, and using gentle massage techniques across the bowel profile, will work around the whole bowel assisting the elimination of waste and gas pockets. The colonic treatment itself takes about 40 minutes. Is it safe? You will be assessed for any contraindications to treatment at your first consultation but if there aren’t any then the treatment is extremely safe. At Beckenham Therapy Rooms all of our equipment is disposable and we do not sterilise equipment like other clinics may do. The water is filtered a number of times and enters at a low pressure so there is no risk of perforation to the bowel.
